Profile

Stephen G. Johnson - Pierce County Criminal Defense Attorney

Stephen G. Johnson graduated in 1991 from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts and Letters in Political Science, with an emphasis in political philosophy, and a minor in Economics. He was accepted to study law at the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University School of Law) in Tacoma, Washington. During his time in law school, Stephen fell in love with Washington State and the whole of the Pacific Northwest and decided to make it his home.

After graduating from law school in 1994 and passing the Bar exam, Stephen Johnson was awarded the public defender contract for the Mason County District Court in Shelton, Washington.  For two and a half years, the District Court was a crucible by which he learned and honed his trial skills. Since that time, Stephen has maintained a rather boutique style criminal law practice, mainly focusing on providing indigent criminal legal services in the Pierce County area on a conflict basis.

In addition to appearing in the Superior Courts for Pierce, King, Thurston, Kitsap, Mason, and Snohomish Counties, Stephen has appeared before all three divisions of the Washington State Court of Appeals and the Washington State Supreme Court. He is also admitted to practice in the Western District Court of the United States (Federal Court).

With the exception of one brief afternoon calendar where Stephen G. Johnson covered for a contract municipal court prosecutor, his entire legal practice has been in the arena of criminal defense. Since 1994, Stephen has tried Class A, B, and C felonies (except Death Penalty cases), as well as misdemeanors.  As Stephen's motto says, he has been “fighting those who fight crime since 1994.”
